Monmouth County Seniors Travel to New York for Holiday Train Exhibit
Residents of Kensington Court Assisted Living Facility, located on Shrewsbury Avenue, attended the Holiday Train Show at the New York Botanical Garden on Thursday, December 20th, to take part in this New York horticultural experience.
Pam Laggy, Activities Director at Kensington Court, said “It was well worth the trip and the residents thoroughly enjoyed it.”
Located in the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory, the show features New York City landmarks that are uniquely replicated by award-winning designer Paul Busse. The scaled down structures are composed of orange slices, cinnamon sticks, poppy pods, pine cones, and other natural plant parts creating more than 140 architectural reproductions. Among the arrangements, trains wind through the magical landscape representing American locomotives and railroad cars from late-1800’s steam engines as well as modern high-speed passenger trains.
“It’s amazing,” said Laggy “what can be done with natural materials; it’s truly something to see.”
Of the metropolitan landmarks, visitors can see creations of the Brooklyn Bridge, St. Patrick’s Cathedral, and other landmarks that are no longer standing like nostalgic Ebbets Field.
According to the New York Botanical Garden, it takes a crew of nearly 20 people about 10 days to situate the buildings, assemble the 1,200 feet of track, get the trains operational, construct the trestles, fill in the hundreds of plants, and place the lights in an orderly fashion.
Frank Scotto, a train enthusiast who moved to Kensington Court 3 weeks ago, made the trip to the Botanical Garden and described his favorite part of the exhibit, “The trains themselves and the scenery was fantastic,” said Scotto “It was wonderful and definitely worth seeing.”
The New York Botanical Garden and Paul Busse began their collaboration in 1992 and, according to the institution, the display becomes more elaborate every year. The Holiday Train Show is open through December 31st and is sponsored by Bank of America.

Students Learn Life Lessons from America's Greatest Generation
Tinton Falls – Seventh Grade students from Holy Cross School in Rumson held an electronic interview with veterans from World War II, Korea and Vietnam last week in an effort to learn “living history” from America’s greatest generation.
Having questions crafted by the children in school, Mrs. Mary Jane Gallo presented them to members of The Adult Day Club Veteran’s Group at Kensington Court in Tinton Falls where she was joined by six veterans who served in the armed forces both as enlisted and drafted servicemen. Mrs. Gallo provided a video camera to record the question and answer session to bring back to her students as an educational tool.
Mrs. Gallo thanked the men on behalf of her and her students saying, “It is truly an honor for me to be here today.”
Gallo stated that one of the many questions about war asked by children in her Social Studies class was, ‘How did you feel?’. The general consensus among the group was a strong and resounding answer of, “scared”.
Seventy-five year old Dominic Manieri of Manalapan enlisted in the Army after graduating from high school and spoke of the many fears during combat. “I’d shake when I’d hear the guns go off,” he described “I only had to fight twice and once shoot at a man; I didn’t hit him and I was glad I didn’t.”
Gallo stated that strength comes to a man who can admit his own fears and Joe Ulan of Little Silver added, “There are no atheists in foxholes…you’re always praying for something.” Describing his own fear, Ulan said he was scared often and always talked to God. Choking up he said, “He always answered me.”
Ulan spent five years in the Navy in the South Pacific and took part in five landings, most notably Iwo Jima. He described the shock of the nation after the attack on Pearl Harbor and how many of his schoolmates also joined the service after graduation.
Manny Burgos, 93, is the oldest veteran at Kensington Court and describes being drafted into service in 1942. “My mother came to the bus with me and said ‘don’t make him go, please don’t make him go’. I told her, ‘Mom, I’m going to be okay’.” Burgos spoke of the difficult time his mother experienced during the war including suffering depression, melancholia, and moving in with family members as a result.
Burgos was assigned to the Military Police unit and spent the years during WWII traveling the United States “chasing down AWOLs” and was never engaged in military combat.
As the mother of two boys, Gallo empathized with Burgos’ mother and said, “Since you stayed in the states, your mother’s prayers seemed to be answered.”
Mrs. Gallo then asked the group that, in all their years, did they ever think that in 2008 the country would see a woman and an African American running for president.
Bill Knox of Long Branch said, “No, I never thought I’d see the day.” Knox became a career serviceman in the Army after being drafted into WWII while at Howard University. An African American originally from Virginia, Knox said the Army provided him with better opportunities for advancement and pay than he would have received as a civilian.
In the end, Gallo asked the experienced veterans about their thoughts on the current state of our military and, more specifically, the war in Iraq. The group offered differing opinions with Ulan saying, “It’s unnecessary and stupid. Why are we there…let’s get out.”
Burgos disagreed saying, “I think differently. If we weren’t there, we’d have enemies over here bombing us.” Part of the larger problem, Burgos feels, is that there is much division in the country and that not everyone can agree. “There’s too much politics…it should be Americans not Republicans and Democrats.”
Because of The Club members’ enthusiasm and information, the group agreed to visit Holy Cross School in the future to meet with students in small groups as part of a continuing education program in Mrs. Gallo’s Social Studies class.

Tips for Caregivers Regarding MRSA Prevention
The recent news about MRSA is concerning to many in the healthcare community as well as the general population. A study published by the American Medical Association showed a significant increase in the number of cases in both healthcare settings and the community. But how can you prevent MRSA if you are a caregiver who is monitoring a loved one at home?
Charles Larobis is the director of Resident Care at Kensington Court Assisted Living facility and Adult Day Care in Tinton Falls, NJ. He is an approved instructor with the National Council of Certified Dementia Practitioners and states the recent MRSA information “cannot get enough attention” and believes there has to be a strong presentation on preventative measures.
MRSA, or Methicillin-resistant Staphlococcus aureus, is a bacterial infection of the skin which, if left untreated, can be transmitted to the blood stream. Because MRSA is resistant to commonly prescribed antibiotics, it is more difficult to treat than other strains of Staph.
According to the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), good hygiene and hand washing plays a critical role in the spread of MRSA and deterrence of infection.
Larobis explains the guidelines as promoting the use of soap, warm water that is not too hot or too cold and using friction. The length of time, according to Larobis, is equally important: about 15 seconds. “A good way for a caregiver to remember that is to sing the song ‘Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star’ while washing their hands.” Larobis said.
Another concern that Larobis feels home caregivers need to know is regarding open wounds and cuts. “The skin is the body’s primary line of defense,” he states “you need to clean it well and cover it.” This is especially true, according to Larobis, of patients who have a Foley catheter. He adds that caregivers who are handling the devices need to take particular caution in this regard because catheter “is a direct route of entry for such an infection”.
The CDC also approves the use of disinfectant hand sanitizers, such as Purell, to prevent the spread of MRSA when soap and water are not available.
Kensington Court has acquired 30 disinfectant hand sanitizer dispensers and has placed them strategically throughout the building. John Woznisky, General Manager of the assisted living and adult day club said, “We have them in the Dining Room, at the elevator banks, and anywhere they can be accessible to staff and residents.”
MRSA infected skin may look like a common “spider bite”, turf burn, abscess, boil or Impetigo, according to the CDC. Caregivers who notice such symptoms should report them to a physician as soon as possible and avoid further contact.

Seniors Take Part in Program at MoMA
Tinton Falls – Residents of Kensington Court Assisted Living, located on Shrewsbury Avenue, attended a private tour at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York City last week. MoMA is one of the first museums in the country to offer programs making its collection and special exhibitions accessible to people with Alzheimer’s disease and their caregivers.
Meet Me at MoMA, created in 2006, is an educational program specifically designed for individuals in the early and middle stages of Alzheimer’s disease and is offered as a monthly educational program featuring interactive tours. The program gives those living with the degenerative disease an animated means and opportunity for dialogue through guided tours during the museum’s non-public hours.

Pam Laggy is the Activities Director at Kensington Court, “They do such a nice job at the museum,” she said “the residents thoroughly enjoyed it.” Laggy describes the private nature of the tour and having private access to the exhibit rooms as being an unusual experience for anyone, not just the residents of Kensington Court.
Of the iconic artwork in MoMA’s collection, the group was able to view paintings such as Cezanne’s Post Impressionist The Bather, Picasso’s Cubist Three Musicians, and Mondrian’s Abstract Broadway Boogie Woogie.
“The tour guide asked questions and interacted with our residents,” said Laggy “they always had something to say and had some really good insights.”
Jim Ryerson, a resident at Kensington Court, attended the outing and was equally impressed with the guided tour. He claims he enjoyed the fact that, on Tuesdays, MoMA only takes groups such as theirs and that the museum was not crowded with pedestrians.
“In the over hour that we spent there,” said Ryerson “those who didn’t know anything about Modern Art left the museum knowing quite a bit about Modern Art.”
Having had no prior knowledge about the subject himself, Ryerson feels the trip was “well worth it” and said, “I think those who didn’t go would have liked it”.
Laggy agrees and said she hopes Kensington Court can provide another outing MoMA in another three months. She said, “I’d love to do it again.”

Seniors Bring Joy to Others at the Holidays
Tinton Falls – Members of the Kensington Choir began practicing this week for their upcoming performances of Holiday Carols. As part of The Club at Kensington Court, an Adult Day Health Facility, the 15 member choir will be practicing twice a week from now through the holidays and will celebrate their inaugural performance at 10:30 AM on December 12th at the Jersey Shore Center, a Nursing Care Community in Eatontown.
“It’s a really nice program,” said Angel Allaire, Activities Director at The Club at Kensington Court, “our sewing group at The Club will be creating their costumes which will be a festive red and white holiday cape.” In addition to the Jersey Shore Center, Allaire claims the group will be performing at Kensington Court’s assisted living facility and possibly other community centered programs.
“This year, we made the choir more creative in their singing by isolating male voices from female in some songs and adding solos.” Allaire said.
Staff members at The Club at Kensington Court believe it is important for their members to utilize their talents and give back to the community whenever possible; especially during the Holiday Season.

Kensington Celebrates Annual Family Holiday Party
Tinton Falls – Kensington Court assistant living facility, located on Shrewsbury Avenue, celebrated the season with the family and friends of its residents at their annual Family Holiday Party on December 6th with over 300 guests. Held in Kensington Court’s impressive Great Room, guests were surrounded by holiday flair including a 15 foot tree decorated with 10,000 lights and metallic gold and crystal ornaments.
The diverse array of entertainers consisted of Hou-Tien Cheng and his ancient Chinese Paper Cutting, Jimmy Brewster and Michelle Marzano performing their Frank Sinatra and Marilyn Monroe show, and music and dancing pleasure by Guy and Graces Wild Rose. The nearly 200 residents and Adult Day Club members delighted in the classics and standards crooned by “Sinatra” and reveled with “Marilyn” as she interacted with the crowd.
Guests dined on Shrimp and Scallops Scampi, Boeuf Bourguignon, and a Venetian Dessert table consisting of such holiday classics like Bouche de Noel. Judy Martinelly of Shrewsbury, whose parents have been residents of Kensington Court since its opening five years ago, said “They do so many special things for the residents here; my parents are very happy.”
Jimmy Brewster, who impersonates the late Frank Sinatra, custom tailored his act for the audience of Kensington Court residents, “I thought the seniors would like it,” said Brewster “it’s their music; they lived through the era.”
In the middle of Brewster’s act, after singing ‘What are you doing the rest of your life?’Sinatra got down on bended knee and asked Monroe, impersonated by Marzano, for her hand in marriage. Little did the audience members know that the duo had not only been performing together for two and a half years, but dating as well. Many thought it was part of their act, but Activities Director at Kensington Court, Pam Laggy, was able to dispel the rumors. Brewster claims he asked for Laggy’s permission to propose at Kensington Court and, “she thought it would be a nice idea.”
After the excitement of Frank and Marilyn’s performance, and an interactive ‘kick-line’ for New York, New York, the band Wild Rose took center stage for more music and dancing entertainment.
Herbert Schwartz, who attends the Day Club at Kensington Court four days a week, claims he was “dumbfounded” to see the huge crowd of people who attended the party and felt it was a great success. “The entertainment was really superb and enjoyable,” said Schwartz “the staff members thoroughly helped make the evening memorable; form parking, serving, and even dancing with the members.” Schwartz acknowledged the employees who “helped make the gala a success who deserve the utmost acclamations.”
Erica Brummer of Oceanport celebrated with her grandmother, Rosa Piccioni, at the party and expressed the comfort in knowing her loved one is being taken care of at Kensington Court. “My mother and I looked at a lot of places,” said Brummer “and this was by far the best. My grandmother lived an amazing, full life – she deserves the best at this stage of her life.” Though Rosa is an Alzheimer’s patient, Brummer feels it is important for residents to maintain a sense of normalcy while receiving proper care, “The people here are tremendous, they do such great things. I pop in often and there’s always something going on.” Brummer said.
Kensington Court will hold a Holiday Decoration Open House, which is open to the public, showcasing their extraordinary lights and ornamentation display on December 19th from 6:30 until 8:00 PM. The event will feature music from the renowned pianist and composer Sergei Novikov, a popular performer who sells thousands of albums each year. The Holiday festivities will also feature sumptuous refreshments, again created by Kensington Court’s Executive Chef, and served in elegantly appointed Great Room.

Brownies Perform for Kensington Residents
Tinton Falls – Three Brownie Troops representing Sickles School in Fair Haven performed holiday songs for the residents of Kensington Court Assisted Living facility on Shrewsbury Avenue December 4th. Troops 1178, 509, and 1233 were comprised of Second Grade girls who, along with their leaders and some parents, visited the residents brining baked goods and cheer as well as their song.
“The residents really enjoyed it,” said Kim Browne who escorted her daughter on the trip “you could tell they really enjoyed seeing the kids.” After a 30 minute performance singing such Holiday favorites as Jolly Old St. Nicholas, We Wish You a Merry Christmas, and The Dreidel Song, troop members passed around cookies and visited with the nearly 100 audience members.
Irene Rappaport, a resident of Kensington Court for one and a half years, said, “I loved them…I think they’re wonderful. I’d rather see children entertain than adults any day; they’re so proud.” Rappaport also believes that, while it is a good experience for children to be exposed to performing in front of a live audience, it has a positive effect on the senior citizens as well.
While taking time out from making small talk, Brownie Katie Boak explained her enthusiasm for the outing, “It’s really exciting for me because I’ve never been here before – the people were so nice and it’s a really pretty place.”
The holiday concert was held in the Great Room at Kensington Court surrounding a 15 foot tree which was decorated with 10,000 lights and metallic gold and crystal ornaments. Wreaths and festive garland draped the two story balconies above in addition to the twinkling lights elegantly strewn among the greenery.
“They do a beautiful job here,” said Rappaport “every holiday they decorate so nicely.”
The Brownie troops handed out their homemade holiday crafts to the residents before leaving Kensington Court. Brownie Katelyn Lucci stated, “This was a lot of fun and I’d like to come back again because I like giving the people cookies and singing.”

Veterans Share Living History at Annual Luncheon
Tinton Falls – Members of The Club at Kensington Court, an Adult Day Health facility, celebrated Veteran’s Day with a nostalgic luncheon on November 26th, honoring those who have served our country and remembering those who have fallen.
Attendees were treated to memories and speeches by fellow Club members and guests who spoke about the day’s history and the meaning of remembrance at this time each year.
Bill Knox, a military retiree having served in the Army for nearly 30 years, is a member of The Club and spoke to fellow seniors about the importance of celebrating Veteran’s Day. Knox is proud to call America “the world’s greatest nation” and considers the Armed Forces to be the institution that has made the most contributions to its greatness. “As custodians of our nation’s foreign policies, defenders against armed aggression and internal domestic conflicts, they have always adhered to three basic principles: duty, honor, and country.” Knox said.
Having served in World War II, the Korean War, and Vietnam, 88 year old Knox proudly displayed his numerous military decorations at the event including the Bronze Star Medal for Valor, Good Conduct Medal, Combat Infantry Badge and two Army Commendation Medals for outstanding performances in the Army Community Service and Race Relations Programs.
The veteran spoke candidly about the United States policy on accepting African Americans in the Army, “Before WWII, the Army was not accepting blacks until President Roosevelt passed a law, after the attack on Pearl Harbor, that blacks must be drafted along with whites.” Knox was drafted as a student at Howard University in 1941 and was commissioned in 1943.
Throughout the day, The Club members enjoyed 1940’s Glenn Miller sounds while dining on Broccoli and Cheddar Soup and a choice of Chateaubriand or Shrimp Scampi that was prepared by the Executive Chef and kitchen staff at Kensington Court. Some guests dressed in festive, patriotic colors and all who attended enjoyed the festive atmosphere among the many decorations.
Angel Allaire, Activities Director at The Club at Kensington Court, has planned the luncheon for the last three years and calls it a tradition, “We have so many Veterans who are members, and we made the decision to honor them in a special way. It’s good for them to be in a community where they can feel comfortable discussing the past,” Allaire said. Leading up to the luncheon, the day club had been working on a Veteran’s Day scrapbook compiled of photos and stories, as well as a patriotic craft that the members will use to decorate The Club Christmas Tree.
Patty Heffernan, Activities Assistant, was impressed with the group’s participation in the presentations, “They really enjoyed the speeches and asked a lot of questions,” stated Heffernan. She claims the compelling stories are educational for everyone at The Club, especially the staff, because the members provide a “living history” for all those involved at the facility.
Herbert Schwartz, 92 year old Veteran and Club member from Manalapan, travels 40 minutes each day to join his fellow Club members, approximately 15 of whom are fellow Veterans. “I’ve spent some time at other organizations,” said Schwartz “and they really make you feel at home here. The lunch was quite different from the other places I’ve been to; I always have a choice.”
Though The Club members experience a high level of activity and special events on a daily basis, Allaire stated, “With everything going on in the world today, we feel so strongly about the importance of honoring those who are considered ‘the Greatest Generation’. We owe them so much.”

National Adult Daycare Week, September 16th - 22nd
Tinton Falls - Adult Day Health Services has long been touted as the best kept secret in healthcare. How apropos then that the theme for this year’s National Adult Daycare Week is “Telling the Story of Caring”. The Club at Kensington Court Adult Day Health Services is pleased to join the more than 3,500 adult day centers across the nation in telling how over 150,000 older Americans nation-wide are cared for each day.
As people age, their needs increase. One-quarter of all daycare participants reside at home alone. Many may be lonely or feel unsafe at home during the day. The remaining three-quarters reside with a spouse, adult children, or other family and friends (NADA, 2007). Adult daycare programs offer participants with a wide range of physical and cognitive abilities medical care, social service, and therapeutic recreational activities in a secure setting during day and evening hours. Many adult daycare programs offer participants services, such as showering, grooming medication administration, and the preparation of nutritious meal, under the supervision of a registered nurse. These responsibilities require coordination and oversight by the caregiver. This can be overwhelming and quite expensive! By sharing the care adult daycare provides a much needed break for caregivers and allows them time to work or to care for themselves while continuing to care for their loved one.
While at daycare, participants tell the stories of their life and new chapters are written as they make new friends and enjoy stimulating activity programs. The compliment of medical care and social activities enhance their quality of like. When this is achieved, seniors can live longer in the community and postpone long-term care placement. Federal, state, and county funding make it possible for many older Americans to attend adult daycare and transportation is available. Daily fees for services vary depending upon the services provided, but are almost always less than a home health visit and about half the cost of a skilled nursing facility (NADA, 2007).
The secret is out about adult daycare and we are proud to tell the story.
